The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
