The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
